EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

## The CPP Pull Tightens the Chemical Market

October’s defining story was the pull of the **CPP** market on vessel supply. The **Baltic’s Pacific basket** averaged around **$80,000** per day, up from **$60,000** in September, and CPP strength drew swing tonnage away from chemical service, keeping **US Gulf** export lanes firm, led by the **Mediterranean** and **Northwest Europe**. The **Baltic Exchange MR Atlantic Basket** softened early in the month before recovering to a peak of **$87,000** per day. The **Strait of Hormuz** conflict entered its ninth month without resolution, and **Brent** crude rose above **$118 a barrel at month-end, its highest level since April.**

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

## Americas Market Overview

October saw US Gulf chemical tanker export markets maintain the firm tone established late in the third quarter with freight levels supported by tightening vessel availability, elevated bunker costs and continued competition from the CPP sector. While activity temporarily slowed during the various conferences, underlying demand remained broadly stable across a diverse range of chemical and commodity cargoes with sentiment improving as the month progressed. The primary market driver remained the gradual reduction in vessel availability as limited open space and steady contractual demand continued to support freight. As the market moves into November, attention remains focused on the balance between available tonnage and demand, with many participants anticipating that tightening vessel supply and resilient export activity will continue.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

### Transatlantic

The USG to Northwest Europe market transitioned from the typical lull associated with the EPCA conference to progressively firmer conditions as vessel availability tightened across both scheduled and spot tonnage. While underlying demand remained broadly steady, strength in the CPP market continued to attract swing tonnage away from chemical service, reducing available space and lending consistent support to freight levels. Market inquiry remained diverse, encompassing styrene, phenol, base oils, ethanol, and acetic acid, with notable fixtures concluded for both ethanol and acetic acid during the period. Prompt space remained limited heading into November with contract nominations maintaining encouraging momentum with market sentiment remaining firm.

Watch Item

Whether tightening prompt vessel availability and continued CPP competition sustain upward freight pressure as November contract nominations and spot requirements develop.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

### West Coast India

The US Gulf to West Coast India tradelane held stable in the first week of September, with an outsider vessel going on berth against a high-paying specialty cargo, before firming through the middle of the month as tightening US Gulf tonnage combined with a sharp rise in bunker costs. A pocket of space that appeared after COA nominations concluded was fixed, thinning the position list, and owners pointed to higher bunker costs and the MEG rate environment as evidence that the market had moved, with some success.

Fresh inquiry outside large MEG cargoes stayed limited, and an owner failed on multiple charterers for a 24,000 metric ton MEG cargo. Rates held steady into the final week, with MEG consistently quoted but not converting to fixtures. A new factor has emerged in quiet chemical shipments from the Arabian Gulf to West Coast India, which may be competing with US Gulf export volumes.

Watch Item

October's supplied market commentary does not include West Coast India, so a November Watch Item cannot yet be established.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

### Far East

The USG to Far East market remained broadly stable during the month with benchmark freight levels exhibiting little movement despite a gradual tightening of overall vessel availability in the US Gulf. Parcel demand was generally subdued resulting in some open space on regular carriers and limiting upward pressure on rates. Market activity was driven primarily by full-cargo methanol movements from both the US Gulf and Caribbean into Asia with several fixtures concluded at levels that continued to outperform the smaller parcel segment. Forward demand was supported by recurring MEG requirements into northeast Asia and sizeable EDC volumes moving to southeast Asia for November loading. Although parcel fixing activity remained relatively limited throughout the month, the outlook for November is cautiously firm, supported by tightening tonnage availability across competing trades and continued demand for full-cargo movements into Asia.

Watch Item

Whether continued full-cargo methanol and EDC demand absorbs available November tonnage, and whether tightening vessel supply across competing trades translates into higher parcel freight rates.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

### South America

Throughout much of October, the USG to east coast South America market remained relatively subdued, with inquiry levels improving as the month progressed but translating into only limited fixing activity. Market interest was driven primarily by base oils and other commodity chemicals although several reported requirements were either delayed, withdrawn, or remained outstanding. Freight levels held stable but were supported by growing demand across competing US Gulf export trades and the potential for tightening vessel availability despite regular operators continuing to offer space for both October and November loading programs. While vessel supply remained sufficient to meet current demand, sentiment improved toward month-end as cargo enquiry volumes increased and stronger activity in alternative export markets raised expectations for firmer conditions heading into November.

Watch Item

Whether improving cargo inquiry converts into firm fixtures and absorbs available November space, particularly as stronger competing US Gulf export trades place pressure on vessel availability.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

### Mediterranean

The USG to Mediterranean market continued to strengthen throughout October as persistent space constraints across both west and east Mediterranean destinations provided sustained support to freight levels. While activity temporarily slowed during the EPCA conference, underlying market fundamentals remained firmly supportive, driven by limited part-cargo opportunities, elevated bunker costs, and a diminishing pool of prompt vessel availability extending well into November. Market interest was led by styrene and a broad range of chemical cargoes including glycols and MTBE with October liftings consistently commanding premiums over September levels.

Looking ahead, sentiment remains firm, underpinned by expectations of robust COA commitments on core carriers, continued vessel supply constraints, and a widely held market view that freight conditions are likely to strengthen further through the remainder of the year.

Watch Item

Whether limited part-cargo opportunities and strong COA commitments continue to restrict November vessel availability, sustaining upward pressure on freight rates across both Mediterranean regions.

## Asia Market Overview

**Regional Conflict & Shipping Security**

The US-Israel conflict with Iran is now entering its 9th month with no resolution in sight despite on-going peace talks led by Qatar and other regional partners. With the US refraining from attacking Iran until possibly after the US mid term elections, the fighting in the region is now being led by Yemeni Houthi rebels attacking strategic sites in Saudi Arabia (refinery installations and public areas).

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues to be targeted by Iran with over 36 vessels allegedly hit in October – the number may well be higher as several vessels are now not reporting attacks to the UKMTO. Since the conflict started, at least 121 vessels have been attacked with 24 seafarers killed.

The number of vessels safely transiting the Strait has increased with the majority being VLCC’s carrying crude oil with a limited number of vessels safely transiting with reportedly LNG a/o petroleum products. The exact number of vessels getting through may well be higher despite the best efforts of Kpler and others to track vessels. Most attacks have been by Iranian drones on vessels following the US protected corridor however recent attacks have included small craft attaching limpet mines (magnetic explosives) to vessels. According to Kpler, several chemical tankers would appear to have transited the SoH with chemicals destined for either Fujairah (for transhipment) or west coast India.

There have been no recent attacks on shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb strait – Houthi rebels have stated they will only attack vessels of Saudi Arabian origin. Container lines are the first regular carriers to start increasing their Red Sea transits instead of via Cape of Good Hope.

**Weather & Port Congestion**

A strong El Nino in the Pacific Ocean is helping to create super typhoons with the latest being ‘Champi’, the strongest storm of the current season thus far, which caused significant damage and injured hundreds of people in northern Taiwan.

Weather disrupted vessel schedules and port congestion, together with increasing bunker prices, has seen freight levels increase throughout northern Asia. Berth congestion at Singapore and a limited number of northbound cargoes is not helping tonnage availability in the north.

**Freight Market Conditions**

A strong inter Asia CPP market boosted by Chinese volumes has seen vessels achieving over $80,000PD. The Baltic’s Pacific basket has averaged around $80,000PD for the month of October – up from September’s average of $60,000PD. This in turn has helped increase freight levels on the longer haul routes to Europe and the USA for MR’s loading renewables and POP’s, with smaller chemical tankers only now just catching on with higher freight albeit now Charterers advising such high freight levels are limiting fixing opportunities.

## Europe Market Overview

The Baltic Exchange MR Atlantic Basket softened during 1H October from mid $60’s per day down to mid $40’s per day before a 2H recovery peaking at $87,000PD. End October TC2 saw a tightening position list as open vessels headed to a stronger Mediterranean market rather than compete on the more traditional trans Atlantic route. TC14 rate fluctuations were driven by the changing number of open vessels rather than more cargoes coming into the market.

The trans Atlantic westbound chemical market has firmed slightly through the month off the back of TC2.

MR Atlantic Basket

October recovery peak

EU Carbon Credits

~€90

 Nearly 5% increase month-on-month

Whilst the Europe/China chemical market continued to be driven by CoA nominations, the spot market has seen a marginal increase primarily driven by increasing bunker costs.

EU Carbon Credits have ended the month just shy of €90 – a near 5% increase month on month and a level not seen since the beginning of the year.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

## Bunkers

Brent crude oil rose above $118 per barrel at the end of October, the highest level seen since the end of April this year – this despite a significant upturn in the volume of crude oil exiting the Middle East Gulf – at one stage, there was more crude oil flowing out of the Gulf than before the conflict started. Today, despite continued attacks on shipping, flows are estimated to be about 60% of their normal pre-war levels. Middle Eastern countries plus also Turkey and Pakistan have held talks with Iranian officials however no peace has yet been agreed. President Trump has repeatedly said that no action will be taken until after the mid term elections whilst U.S. and regional officials have briefed Gulf allies to prepare for a possible short, intense round of renewed military strikes as soon as November 4 if diplomatic negotiations and Qatari-led mediation fail. Markets have seemingly factored this into current pricing with analysts not expecting crude oil prices to surpass $120 per barrel.

Supply conditions explain the spread between ports. Fujairah remained severely constrained across all fuel grades, with 12 Strait of Hormuz transits recorded on September 25 against a pre-war average of 140, and its VLSFO averaged $77/mt above Singapore. Prompt availability in Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp stayed tight, with traders recommending lead times of 5 to 7 days. Fuel oil inventories at Singapore, Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp and Fujairah were reported about 30% below three-year seasonal averages.

Watch Item

The October bunker commentary or pricing data has not yet been provided, so I can't establish a specific November Watch Item without introducing unsupported market developments.

SPI Marine - October 2026 Monthly Chemical & Tanker Report

## Iran Watch

October saw continued disruption to shipping through the **Strait of Hormuz**, with repeated tanker attacks, naval mine incidents and escalating regional security concerns. Iranian restrictions on vessel movements and the ongoing US blockade complicated transit conditions, while additional US sanctions targeted companies and vessels linked to Iranian oil exports. Despite continued diplomatic efforts, no agreement was reached to fully reopen the waterway. **Elevated security risks, restricted vessel movements and uncertainty surrounding regional stability** remained key concerns for tanker operators and charterers heading into November.

Watch Items

- **Strait of Hormuz:** Monitor developments surrounding reopening negotiations, Iranian transit restrictions and the potential for further disruption to commercial shipping.
- **Vessel Security:** Watch for additional tanker attacks, naval mine incidents and changes to maritime security guidance that could affect vessel routing and availability.
- **Sanctions & Freight:** Monitor further US sanctions, blockade enforcement and potential increases in war-risk insurance premiums and freight costs.
